Nottingham Forest start talks with the Manchester United over goalkeeper Dean Henderson
Nottingham Forest has opened talks with the Manchester United to sign goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with the player interested in the move.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that newly promoted Forrest wants to sign Henderson on loan with an option to buy the 25-year-old for around £20m.
Forrest may face competition with Henderson but with Newcastle having a link with the goalkeeper.
Henderson is keen to secure first-team football, something that will be difficult to do at Old Trafford given David de Gea’s return in form.
The United academy graduate rose to prominence several seasons ago after successive successful loan spells at Sheffield United, helping the Blades rise from the Championship and then ensuring survival in the Premier League with the impressive ninth-place finish.
Subsequently, he was incorporated into the first team of the Red Devils and after a series of impressive performances; he overtook the struggling De Gea in the standings and secured a place in the England’s squad for the Euro 2020.
United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the time described Henderson as a world-class goalkeeper and claimed: “He will be No. 1 in England and No. 1 at Manchester United at some point.”
However, during the Euros, Henderson suffered a serious thigh injury, before contracting COVID-19 just before the start of the season, and in his absence De Gea regained his place and the form of the inspiring Spaniard confined Henderson to only three times.
While new United boss Eric Ten Hag has yet to assess his entire squad, Henderson is expected to leave, either on loan or permanently, in order to gain match time, with a place in England’s squad for the 2022 World Cup at stake.
Everton’s Jordan Pickford and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale are Gareth Southgate’s first picks, but third place is very open, with Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope and former West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnston also vying for a place on the flight to Qatar. .
